Campaign begins to protect underwater cables
The Shanghai Water Authority today launched a joint campaign to protect underwater optical cables, which are often damaged by fishing nets and anchors.
The authority dispatched a law enforcement team of more than 50 officers with ships and speedboats along with helicopters with local police to patrol the mouth of the Yangtze River near Chongming Island.
Patrol boats will ask vessels to leave the restricted areas where the cables are buried, said Shen Yiyun, the authority’s deputy director.
More than 80 percent of the country’s optical cables for overseas telecommunications and Internet use are buried in the area. They connect China with over 200 countries and regions, according to Shen.
Gas and oil pipelines are also buried in the area.
