Car plate auction invalid due to system malfunction

The Shanghai car plate auction for private bidders held online this morning was declared invalid due to data interaction anomalies, the Shanghai International Commodity Auction Co said.
Because of malfunctioning of the auction system, all the bids placed today were considered ineffective, and a new auction will be held at a time yet to be announced, to protect the interest of all participants, the company said.
It is not the first time that bidders have got a technical frustration. Over the past few months, many of them were struggling with web traffic congestion at the last minute of the auction, a time when almost everyone placed their final bids.
The situation deteriorated when the number of participants hit a record high of more than 114,000 last month.
This month, the car plate supply was kept at the same level as last month 7,400, which was pre-set by the municipal government out of a quota of 100,000 for the whole year. The official number of bidders is yet to be disclosed.
