Carbon equilibrium
THE USA Pavilion and Alcoa Foundation, a nonprofit US corporate foundation, jointly announced yesterday that the pavilion has reached carbon equilibrium for the World Expo even though there is more than one month before the event ends.
A total of 8,250 tons of carbon offset credits were purchased from three selected projects in China - a Jiangsu landfill gas to energy conversion project, a Gansu micro-scale hydroelectric power generation project and a Gansu wind farm project.
Expo officials said they welcome the adoption of appropriate methods to realize carbon equilibrium and want more pavilions to take part in the campaign to achieve a green Expo.
Shanghai environmental officials promised in May that the Expo will realize 60 to 70 percent of carbon offsets before the event ends on October 31. They added carbon equilibrium would be reached four to five years later with the help of low-carbon technologies and by planting trees.
