Celebrating Museum Day with free entries
MORE than 100 local museums will mark International Museum Day on Saturday with free or reduced admission, as well as over 200 cultural events.
Shanghai Auto Museum, Shanghai Museum of Glass and China Maritime Museum are among the 126 taking part.
The former residences and memorials of Party leaders and cultural celebrities such as educator Huang Yanpei (1878-1965), painter Wu Changshuo (1844-1927) and journalist Zou Taofen (1895-1944) will also not charge visitors over the weekend.
Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Shanghai Natural History Museum, Guanfu Museum and Shanghai Film Museum will offer half-price tickets on Saturday and Sunday. The Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum in Hongkou District will offer half-price entry on Saturday.
International Museum Day was established in 1977 to raise awareness that 鈥渕useums are an important means of cultural exchange, enrichment of cultures and development of mutual understanding, cooperation and peace among peoples,鈥 according to the International Council of Museums, organizer of the event. Last year, more than 37,000 museums took part in over 150 countries and territories.
This year鈥檚 theme is 鈥淢useums as Cultural Hubs: The Future of Tradition.鈥 The focus will be on the role of museums as active actors in their communities, according to the council.
The Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism has a list of museums offering free admission on its website 鈥 whlyj.sh.gov.cn (in Chinese only).
Visitors are advised to contact the museums to check how busy they expect to be before traveling. To cope with the expected rise in visitors, many museums will stay open until 9pm on Saturday.
The museums will hold 220 special activities for Museum Day this year.
Shanghai Museum, for instance, will invite young experts to guide visitors and families around various special exhibitions on Friday.
China Maritime Museum is inviting children to take part in naval and scientific themed events or make models in the museum through June 30.
Shanghai Telecom Museum will present the former working conditions of telecom workers, while Shanghai Natural Wild Insect Kingdom will invite visitors to make butterfly specimens and greeting cards.
Meanwhile, tourism authorities say visitors should avoid peak hours if they plan to go to any of the city鈥檚 tourist attractions on Sunday because of a half-price admission offer to mark China Tourism Day.
Long queues are expected, and scenic spots may limit the number of visitors depending on the situation on the day, the Shanghai Administration of Culture and Tourism said.
Visitors are also advised to pay close attention to the details of discounts on offer. The Huangpu River cruise tour, for example, which costs 120 yuan (US$17.46) normally, will be half price on the day, but only for trips between 11am and 5pm, according to the administration.
The 88th-floor observatory of Jin Mao Tower will offer discounts between 8:30am and 4:30pm, with night tours excluded.
Discounts at attractions such as Shanghai Century Park, Shanghai Gongqing Forest Park, Shanghai Zoo, China Maritime Museum, Yuehu Sculpture Park, Shanghai Guyi Garden, Shanghai Haichang Ocean Park and Shanghai Film Museum only apply to adult visitors, the administration said.
Shanghai Disney Resort will offer discounted admission after 3pm on the day, while half-price entry at Shanghai Malu Grape Park will last till June 14.
It has become a tradition for major scenic spots in the city to provide half-price tickets on China Tourism Day and during the annual Shanghai Tourism Festival in September.
Visitor numbers are several times larger than normal at popular venues such as Shanghai Ocean Aquarium and Shanghai Wild Animal Park.
