Cerebral and cardio vascular disease top killer of local residents

CEREBRAL and cardio vascular disease is the top killer of local registered residents last year, covering 38.8 percent of disease deaths. It means there are 46,000 registered residents who died of this cause a year, officials from Shanghai Center of Disease Control and Prevention said.

The incidence of stroke is 1.8 percent in Shanghai, so there are about 230,000 residents suffering stroke every year, Dr Wu Fan, director of Shanghai CDC said in a media interview.

Experts said stroke prevention should start from cholesterol management. Unhealthy cholesterol level is a key risky factor for stroke. About 46 percent of all residents including registered ones and migrants staying in the city for over six months over 35 years old have abnormal cholesterol data.

“It is important to promote the understanding to low-density lipoprotein and high density lipoprotein. LDL is called as ‘the bad cholesterol’ for its effects of narrowing the artery opening, while HDL is called as ‘the good cholesterol’ for its effects of transporting fat molecules out of artery and thus help prevent stroke,” said Dr Wang Hongmei from Shanghai No.6 People’s Hospital.

“About 70 percent of stroke is because of LDL, which can be controlled through healthy lifestyle and medication,” she said.
