Cheap meals on wheels fill up hungry office staff
The city鈥檚 first subsidized lunch delivery service for employees was launched in Putuo District yesterday to make it easier for office workers to get their midday meal.
The scheme, initiated by the Changshou Road Subdistrict which has 48 office buildings and many innovation parks such as the M50 art hub, is expected to benefit about 100,000 employees in both domestic and overseas firms in the area.
Prices are cheaper than the usual delivery services and safety is assured. The subdistrict invited reputable local restaurants and online retailers to cook special box meals for employees at office buildings. Each meal costs about 20 yuan (US$2.94) after a 5-yuan subsidy from the subdistrict.
There are over 6,000 companies in the subdistrict and over 90 percent have no canteen. An online survey found the top demand of 92.6 percent of employees was a convenient, cheap and reliable lunch every day.
Office workers in the Changshou area have few choices for lunch, said an employee surnamed Shi at Technology Mansion at 1255 Xikang Road. Many small eateries had been shut down amid the citywide crackdown against illegal buildings, while the remaining restaurants and delivery services are too expensive, she said.
It cost about 40 yuan to order a meal from nearby restaurants and delivery could be slow at lunchtime, she added.
Shi and her colleagues became the first batch of employees to experience the new service yesterday.
鈥淭he price is reasonable and we don鈥檛 have to worry about where to have lunch anymore,鈥 Shi told Shanghai Daily.
A deliveryman arrived at her building with dozens of box meals for people who ordered through a mobile phone app.
