China Eastern seeks female trainee pilots

CHINA Eastern Airlines is breaking tradition by seeking five women to train as pilots, rather than recruiting from the air force, today's Laodong Daily reported.

All women pilots now working at China's major airlines are air force veterans, the newspaper said.

Candidates must pass a strict physical examination and reach the standards applying to male pilots, according to the company.

Those recruited will have three years' training before starting work. The training will cost the airline 700,000 yuan (US$102,541) each.

The only female pilot now at China Eastern was an air force veteran who joined the airline in 1999.
