China鈥檚 鈥榙arling girl鈥 passes away at 95
China鈥檚 鈥渄arling girl,鈥 renowned actress and writer Huang Zongying, died yesterday morning in Shanghai at age of 95.
Last year, Huang was recognized for her lifetime achievements in her field with the Shanghai Literature and Art Award, the city鈥檚 top honor for artists and writers given out every five years.
The Shanghai Writers鈥 Association, which Huang retired from in 1993, released an obituary.
鈥淎 person, alive or dead, should not bring suffering onto others,鈥 Huang once wrote. 鈥淚 have left, and I love you all still, deeply.鈥
Her former editor Yu Zhi wrote an article in the local Wenhui Daily, where Huang published her first essay in 1946 and many that followed, remembering her as an 鈥渙ld child鈥 with both innocence and the pursuit of truth.
In her early years, Huang, who was born in Beijing in 1925, was proclaimed China鈥檚 鈥渄arling girl,鈥 the title of her popular debut stage performance at the age of 16. As a writer, she was one of the first to report on the lives, challenges and ambitions of middle-aged Chinese artists, scientists and writers in the late 1970s and early 1980s, shortly after the 鈥渃ultural revolution鈥 (1966-1976).
