City cops will test new safety equipment
TRAFFIC police officers in the city will test four new pieces of equipment that they hope will help them gather evidence and improve their safety.
The new equipment - a light-emitting diode podium, an LED baton, a video camera and a mini recorder - will be distributed to some police officers in 10 districts including Jing'an, Huangpu, Luwan and Xuhui. These officers will test the quality and efficiency of the items for a month.
Shanghai Public Security Bureau officials said the new equipment makes it easier to identify traffic police, therefore it may protect them from potential danger while on duty.
"The number of injuries traffic cops suffer has risen in recent years," said Yang Honggen, deputy director of the bureau's rear service department, without giving figures. Yang said traffic police officers are vulnerable to car accidents in low-visibility environments.
Officers can use the recorder and camera to collect audio and video evidence in cases involving traffic violations.
Traffic police throughout the city are already equipped with a mini recorder, but the new one has a larger screen and better sound quality, officers said.
High-tech Gear To Protect Police
Mini video camera
Weighing only 20 grams, the new mini video camera is the size of a pen cap. Police can start recording by pressing one button.
LED podium
The new podium has an LED function that makes it easier for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians to see traffic police on duty at intersections at night or on rainy and foggy days.
LED baton
The new baton combines a flashlight with a fluorescent stick. Police said the LED baton is waterproof and five times brighter than an ordinary fluorescent stick.
Mini recorder
The recorder includes an LCD screen that shows the time, making recording precise details of traffic accidents easier.
