City dock takes on a new role
THE revitalized Shiliupu Dock on the Huangpu River will be ready for travelers by this Saturday.
Following the reopening of the Bund in late March, the dock, which has a history going back about 150 years, is expected to combine the best of the old and the new.
The Shanghai Huangpu River Assert Management Co, the dock operator, said the dock enjoyed a high reputation among local people and it hoped to see a busy dock once again.
The dock was originally due to open together with the revamped Bund but construction work took longer than expected.
The dock, at the southern end of the Bund, has been transformed into a water tourism center with commercial and leisure facilities and high-class restaurants.
The dock, now a business venue, is also a cruise-ship terminal that has 12 berths for river sightseeing ships touring between the Nanpu Bridge and Yangpu Bridge. A ticket for the trip will cost 100 yuan (US$14.71).
The lack of parking spaces around the Bund will be eased after the Shiliupu compound reopens.
The area will offer about 800 parking spaces and there is a bus hub nearby with four bus routes in service.
The Shiliupu Dock area, one of the city's oldest wharf areas, used to be responsible for shipping between Shanghai and other cities.
It played an important role in the city's development as a busy shipping center.
But it saw a decline in the past few decades as the city changed and other modes of transport were adopted.
The opening-up and development of the Pudong New Area and the establishment of the Yangshan Deep-Water Port further chipped away at Shiliupu.
With growth on both sides of the Huangpu River, the dock was designated by the city government to be rebuilt into a water tourist center.
