City issues first orange heat alert

SHANGHAI'S weather bureau issued this summer's first orange heat alert today when the highest temperature was forecast to be over 37 degrees Celsius.

Shanghai Meteorological Bureau issued the alert at 2:30pm, replacing a yellow alert, Xinmin.cn reported.

A yellow alert indicates the temperature will rise to 35 degrees or above while a red alert means the mercury will reach over 40 degrees.

Bureau data indicated the temperature at downtown Xujiahui area skyrocketed to 37.2 degrees at 2:30pm while it was 37.3 degrees on the World Expo site.

People are advised to reduce outdoor activities to prevent sunstroke.
