City mulls plan for a high-tech astronomical museum

SHANGHAI will build a museum to popularize knowledge of astronomy and showcase the latest achievement in astronomy, local science officials told the International Symposium on Science Popularization in Shanghai today.
Zhao Shiming, deputy curator of the Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, said the municipal government and scientists are discussing details about the museum, which will be the second on the Chinese mainland after the Beijing museum.
"It will present the history and progress in space and aviation research," Zhao said. "Visitors will feel like traveling in space, instead of watching a 3-D or 4-D film as is common in many domestic museums."
He said the museum will emphasize visitors' experiences. People will have a chance to observe planets and stars through telescopes in the museum.
Also at the symposium, officials said the construction of a new Shanghai Natural Science Museum will be completed next year and opened to the public in downtown Jing'an District.
