City plans 21 new parks for suburbs

RESIDENTS will enjoy more public green space as the city's legislators yesterday passed a plan to build 21 suburban parks covering about 400 square kilometers. And construction on five of them, featuring various themes, will start soon.

The first group of five parks in the city's Qingpu, Songjiang, Minhang and Jiading districts, and Chongming Island will cover a total of 103 square kilometers, the city's urban planning body told legislators.

"These parks will become the back-yard gardens for people in Shanghai," said an official with the Shanghai Planning, Land and Resources Administrative Bureau.

The parks will feature different themes. The park in the western suburb in Qingpu, to cover about 20 square kilometers, will mainly showcase wetlands and rivers, while the parks in Songjiang and Minhang districts will have large areas planted in trees.

A park on Changxing Island will mainly feature its natural scenery along the Yangtze River.

The 14-square-kilometer park in Jiading will show visitors a wide variety of trees and flowers.

Parks close to some residential areas in the districts will have convenient road access, the official said. The other parks will be built following the five trial projects.
