City police catch suspected laptop battery thieves

SHANGHAI police have broken up a gang that allegedly stole laptop batteries worth 800,000 yuan (US$117,647) from a company in Songjiang District.

Police said the suspected gang leader surnamed Su was the former leader of security at the company.

During the investigation police used video surveillance footage from the company. The footage showed a man in the corridor of the company's storage area at 2am on the day of the crime.

Company officials confirmed it was Su, who had quit in March. However he often came back and sometimes stayed overnight in the company's dorm, police were told.

After being caught, Su allegedly confessed to police that he wanted to earn a lot of money in a short period. His accomplices told police Su told them where the batteries were stored and kept watch for them.

The laptop batteries were sold for 70,000 yuan to a waste collection station, police said.

The batteries changed hands again and were finally sold in the second-hand market on Qiujiang Road, police said.
