City police rescue woman held at knifepoint

POLICE safely rescued a woman held hostage at knifepoint by a man in an ordeal that lasted close to two hours early this morning in downtown Shanghai.

The man armed with a knife was fleeing police. He took the woman hostage when he escaped to Chengdu Road N. in Jing'an District at about 1am. He threatened to harm the woman if police refused his demands, Eastday.com reported.

The man asked police for a vehicle for his escape.

Special Squads failed twice to rescue the woman. Police negotiators also failed to appease the irate man, the report said.

At 2:30am, police ambushed the man from behind, capturing him. The woman was not injured.

The case is still under investigation, the report said.
