City punishes more than 800 officials

MORE than 800 cadres were punished in Shanghai last year, including 10 sub-ministry level officials as well as 62 division chiefs, according to the disciplinary organ of the city's Party committee.

Discipline inspectors cracked 875 corruption cases or discipline violations in 2008 and saved about 355 million yuan (US$51.91 million) in public funds, the disciplinary committee of the Communist Party of China Shanghai Committee said.

Zhang Kepeng, former vice director of Putuo District, was disciplined for taking bribes.

Fan Xianyin, former chairman of Shanghai-based Double Coin Holdings Ltd and former vice president of Shanghai Huayi (Group) Company, was convicted of pocketing public funds and taking bribes.

Discipline inspectors filed 901 investigations last year. A total of 61 investigations involving 60 people involved land, environmental protection and relocation cases. Eighteen of the 60 people have been referred to judicial departments, the report said.

They also punished 26 people responsible for a gas station explosion on November 24, 2007. They also seized 9.32 million yuan in illicit funds collected by the city's education sector.

Civil servants handed in 21.3 million yuan of cash and gifts last year, according to the disciplinary committee.

Meanwhile, 9,206 accusations against city officials were clarified, it added.
