City railway police rescue newborn from human trafficker
THE city's railway police yesterday rescued a three-day-old baby from a human trafficker on a train from Hubei to Shanghai.
Police detained the suspect surnamed Jin and sent the baby girl back to her hometown in Xinjian County of Nanchang City, Jiangxi Province.
Jin confessed to police he bought the baby girl for 5,000 yuan (US$735) and planed to sell her to his wife's colleague in Shanghai, officers said.
Both railway police and police in Jiangxi will continue investigating the case.
The middle-aged Jin was found only carrying two bottles of milk powder with the baby girl and his own daughter on the train on Wednesday night.
Railway police were suspicious because Jin didn't carry any other luggage. When officers asked about the baby's name, he failed to answer and was taken to the dining carriage for further questioning.
There, police found a piece of paper with the girl's name and birth time on it. Jin finally confessed he worked in a coal mine in Xinjian County and was asked to buy a baby by his wife several days ago, police said.
He learned of a family in a neighboring village who wanted to sell their newborn daughter. He bought the girl and boarded the train to Shanghai.
