City removes unsafe kiddie rides after tot lost 3 fingers

AUTHORITIES seized 58 unlicensed kiddie rides in a citywide crackdown after a Shanghai toddler lost three fingers when playing with a rider last Sunday.

Local industrial and commercial inspectors said they discovered a website that sold kiddie rides and confiscated 58 unlicensed and unlabeled kiddie rides in a warehouse on Minhe Road on Tuesday night.

The online vendor, surnamed Xu, said he bought the unlicensed kiddie rides from Taizhou, a city in neighboring Zhejiang Province and sold them via the website.

Inspectors said they will check if the seized kiddie rides meet the national safety standards before meting out punishment to Xu.

Last Sunday, an 18-month-old boy put his hand into a hole in a kiddie ride outside a supermarket in the city's Wanggang Town and lost three fingers. Firefighters packed his severed fingers with ice and rushed them to the hospital but doctors failed to reattach the cut-off fingers.
