City scores in top five for drink-driving

SHANGHAI is among the top five provinces and cities with the worst drink-driving problems after China launched a two-month nationwide crackdown on August 15.

The city ranked third following Zhejiang and Shandong provinces where most drink-driving offenders had been caught by August 28, the Ministry of Public Security said on its Website, without revealing specific figures.

The other two regions in the top five were Jiangsu Province and Beijing. The number of the cases found in the five provinces and cities amounts to 53% of the total number.

The ministry said a total of 28,800 cases of drink driving were found in the country during the first two weeks of the campaign. Drivers involved in 4,376 of the cases were drunk while driving.

Most of those caught driving under the influence of alcohol were successful men in their thirties or forties. In Beijing, for example, two thirds of the drunk drivers caught were either office workers or business owners.

Nightclubs and restaurants were where most drunk drivers were caught
