City shakes but small quake poses little danger
A SMALL earthquake in neighboring Jiangsu Province yesterday won't have any effect on Shanghai, Shanghai Seismological Bureau officials said, despite some shaking being felt in the city.
Some residents, especially those in high-rises, said they felt shaking in the morning and called the bureau to find out what was going on.
The inshore area of Rudong County in Jiangsu's Nantong City had a 4-magnitude earthquake at 10:24am yesterday, the bureau said. The depth of earthquake was 12 kilometers and the epicenter 132 kilometers from Shanghai's downtown areas.
The local earthquake monitoring system detected the quake and its experts contacted Jiangsu authorities immediately after the earthquake.
The Nantong Seismological Bureau said it was a small quake and would have no effect on buildings. Its duration was very short and it could be considered a normal movement of the earth's crust.
