City tightens traffic safety check as holiday rush nears
SHANGHAI traffic watchdog is cracking down on the illegal practice of buses picking up passengers outside bus stations ahead of the big rush for Spring Festival holidays.
The local traffic law enforcement team said some bus operators "try to make more money by picking up passengers along the way after leaving the stations" as people are traveling home for the Spring Festival reunion.
Violators will be fined 1,000 to 3,000 yuan, said officials who already caught 2,700 violators so far this year.
Inter-city buses will be tracked by GPS for signs of speeding, overloading and fatigue driving which are main causes of road accidents.
Police said they will watch closely for hazardous behaviors like fatigue driving. Drivers of buses and trucks carrying dangerous goods must take a rest for more than 20 minutes after four hours of continuous driving otherwise they will lose all the points on their driver's license.
