City to host over 200 cruise liners next year

More than 200 international cruise liners will dock at the Wusong Port in Baoshan District next year, making it one of the busiest ports for cruise liners in Asia, officials said today.

The Wusong International Cruise Terminal began operation in October last year and has received 60 international liners so far this year and more than 300,000 tourists from around the world, Wang Hong, director of Baoshan District, told a forum today.

"Next year, more international cruises will dock here, boosting Shanghai's reputation as a world-renowned destination," he said.

The Shanghai government designated a 1,500-meter shoreline for the construction of the Wusong terminal in an effort to build the city into an international shipping center.

The Wusong port has unparalleled advantages in developing the cruise industry, such as deep-water berths and unspoiled natural environment, Wang added.

In the current first phase, it can accommodate two international cruise liners with a load capacity of 100,000 tons each.

Meanwhile, the district is working to attract cruise industry professionals and managers and will cooperate with local universities and international cruise companies to train cruise industry employees, the officials said.
