LANTERNS will be lit starting tonight at the 492-year-old Guyi Garden in Jiading District for a week to celebrate the traditional Lantern Festival.
The festival falls on Friday and it is an occasion for families to gather to watch ornate lanterns and guess the answers to riddles.
Forty-five lantern displays, including a first-time 3D show, will be held at the garden, according to the organizers. In the largest display, the lanterns will form a dome 18 meters in diameter and 9 meters high.
A total of 2,014 riddles and games will be presented for visitors to have fun while admiring the splendid lanterns in the garden, which dates back to the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644). Nanxiang Town’s old streets are nearby and a good place for snacks.
This year’s Lantern Festival, or Yuanxiao in Chinese, falls on Friday. It is on the 15th night of the first lunar month, which marks an end to Chinese Lunar New Year celebrations.
