Clinton visits USA Pavilion
US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton visited the construction site of the USA Pavilion at the Shanghai World Expo grounds yesterday morning and pledged her support for the American effort at the world's fair next year.
Jose Villarreal, the US commissioner general to the Expo, opened the proceedings.
During Clinton's 10-minute speech, she thanked sponsors and highlighted the importance of the USA Pavilion, speaking of her determination to support it.
Addressing sponsors, she said, "We are grateful for your support for this success."
Clinton also said she appreciated that the Boeing Co has doubled its contribution from US$1 million to US$2 million.
Also yesterday, US organizers announced that the consumer goods giant Procter & Gamble Co has become a sponsor of the pavilion. P&G said it will offer financial support and provide an array of products for the USA Pavilion and the World Expo. No figures were revealed.
Clinton added that the USA Pavilion is still welcoming additional funding.
US officials announced in September that they had raised about two-thirds of the targeted US$61 million needed to build and run the pavilion, which should finish construction by the end of the year.
"The USA Pavilion will be built around the (Expo) theme 'Better City, Better Life,'" Clinton said. "It will demonstrate the spirit and the core values of the United States ..."
"I look forward to being here in summer to see our magnificent pavilion," she said.
