`Cloned' cabs crushed as city lashes at illegal operation
THE city intensified its crackdown on illegal taxis today by destroying 26 "cloned" cabs in the first showdown this year.
Local taxi watchdog has seized 1,070 cars involved in illegal taxi operation in the first nine months of this year. Among them were 213 cloned taxis, including retired cabs and knockoffs bought in black markets.
The illegal operators will be fined up to 50,000 yuan (US$7,470) when they come to claim their cars. However, many offenders just abandon their cars and buy new ones to carry on their illegal business, officials said.
The cost for storing confiscated cars is high, said the city's law enforcement team. Some parts from the destroyed taxis would be reused, they added.
