Cloned card thief robs ex-boss

A 25-YEAR-OLD man accused of using a cloned credit card to steal 16,200 yuan (US$2,573) from his former boss's account has been charged with fraud, Putuo District prosecutors said yesterday.

The suspect, surnamed Weng, said he bought the cloned card online after he saw an offer to make a new credit card using another card's number. Weng told prosecutors he needed money. Surveillance video showed Weng, with a poncho and umbrella, at an ATM machine in the wee hours of June 18. Still, half his face showed for a few seconds, allowing the victim to recognize him.

"I was upset. I didn't believe it until I saw money coming out of the machine," Weng said.

Weng was caught on August 14 but the vendor who sold the cloned card hasn't been caught yet, prosecutors said.
