Coining It In
SOME commemorative coins have soared in value - with a 1988 set celebrating the 40th anniversary of the founding of the People's Bank of China topping the list. The nine-coin set, at one time sold among collectors for 2.5 yuan (38 US cents), is now worth 3,400 yuan.
A coin commemorating the 30th anniversary of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, also issued in 1988, is the second most valuable at 1,100 yuan. This is followed by coins issued in 1987 to celebrate the 6th National Games, worth 500 yuan.
Coins marking the 35th anniversary of the People's Republic of China have also appreciated. All the above coins were issued in runs of less than 4 million.
