Cold drives birds from city parks

COLD weather has driven birds from parks in downtown Shanghai, today's Oriental Morning Post reported, citing a survey by Shanghai Greenery and Urban Sanitation Administration.

The survey monitored birds in four parks: Gongqing Forest Park, Daning Lingshi Park, Shanghai Botanic Park and Century Park.

Last year, 12,207 birds of 90 species were observed in the parks, fewer than in 2007 and 2008, the report said, without detailing the previous figures.

Downtown parks are not suitable for water birds, which accounted for a mere 3 percent of total birds observed there, the report indicated.

Poaching was another leading cause for the shrinking volume of birds, the report found. Nets were found placed in some parks by poachers to catch birds.
