Cold front brings chilly weather tonight

Shanghai's temperature will drop by six degrees Celsius tonight under the influence of a moderate cold front from north China, local weathermen said today.

Dominated by a warm air mass, the city is pretty warm today with a high of 26 degrees Celsius, said the Shanghai Meteorological Bureau. But a cold snap is coming and will send the mercury down to 17 degrees early next morning. Tomorrow's maximum temperature will stay below 21 degrees.

The temperature is likely to fall further on Thursday and Friday with a low of 16 degrees in downtown areas and 13 degrees in the suburbs, said Fu Yi, a chief forecaster at the bureau.

Weather in the next few days will be mostly sunny and cloudy and the temperature will pick up during the weekend.

A strong cold front was sweeping across northern and eastern parts of China today, bringing a large drop in temperatures and rainfall, the National Meteorological Center said.

Some regions in China's northern area could expect to experience temperature drops of between 10 and 12 degrees Celsius, the center said.

Today, snow and strong winds will sweep north China, including the northeastern parts of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region and the Heilongjiang Province as well as northwestern Gansu Province.

Meanwhile, most areas in south China will have continuous rain.

The temperature in Beijing was as low as four degrees Celsius this morning with rainfall in the city. This contributed to traffic jams during the peak rush hour.
