Cold front protocol activated
As temperatures plummet, shelters across Shanghai activated an emergency response yesterday with a yellow alert for cold (the third highest in a four-tier system) to ensure the safety of homeless people, civil affairs authorities said.
Street patrols have been stepped up, and items such as quilts and heavy clothing have been prepared at shelters, the Shanghai Civil Affairs Bureau said.
Shelters provide homeless people with free meals and accommodation, and operate 24 hours a day.
For those not wishing to stay in a shelter, officials have provided free quilts, masks, food and hot water along with shelter information.
Shelters have implemented strict rules regarding temperature checks, disinfection, quarantine and no communal meals.
Shanghai experienced a low of zero degrees Celsius yesterday.
Since the end of last year, Shanghai shelters have supported close to 1,500 homeless people, according to the bureau.
