Collapsed hut kills man in demolition tragedy
A MAN was killed and -another injured after a two-story workers' hut collapsed -yesterday morning in -Changning District.
The men were demolishing the building when the accident happened about 8:50am on Jinzhong Road.
The dead man, Shen Fubin, was 52 and the injured man, Shen Fuchun, is 50. They are believed to be brothers.
"I just want to move out now," said a worker, surnamed Ni, who lives in a hut nearby.
Ni said he saw the workers using hammers to pull down the approximately 200-square-meter steel-concrete structure in the early morning. However, when Ni looked again, it had collapsed, leaving a large pile of rubble.
Police and emergency staff arrived and sent the workers, who were buried beneath the rubble, to a local hospital.
Tao Cheng, deputy -director of the district work -safety -bureau, said they were still investigating the cause of the collapse.
The injured man suffered broken ribs and was in stable condition in a local hospital, authorities reported.
At the site, which is in an open space, four similar huts remain standing, but they are also scheduled to be demolished soon, said Ni. He and other workers rented the huts because they were working at a nearby construction site.
The demolition work began yesterday, the workers said. One building has already been pulled down.
