College students warned about job fraud

CITY police yesterday urged college students to be careful when taking up "high-paying" job opportunities offered by some human resource agencies.

The warning came after 150 out-of-town students were left in the lurch in Shanghai by illegal job agents.

The students from Henan Province, who had paid agents for job opportunities in Shanghai, were booked into a suburban hotel after arriving on Sunday, police said.

They had used up most of their money by Tuesday, and with no one showing up to arrange for interviews or work as promised, they called police, Jinshan District police said.

By yesterday, 56 of the students had been sent back to their hometown of Xinxiang City in Henan while the rest are trying to find jobs here.

The police said recruitment information is easy to come by during this time of the year when college students graduate and summer vacations are about to start.

The 150 students had been told they had a chance of working for a famous corporation in Shanghai, either part-time or full-time, said one of the student surnamed Guan.

Each student only needed to pay 200 yuan (US$30.9) for transportation and health check to get the job.

The students arrived in Chedun Town, Songjiang District, on Sunday and were booked into a small hotel. The next day, they were told the corporation they expected to work for had finished recruitment and they had to be split into two groups for other factories - Songjiang and Jinshan.

"We spent another night in Jinshan, after which there was no word from the agency," Guan said.
