Construction accidents claim 40 lives across city
SHANGHAI'S construction authorities said yesterday that 39 construction site accidents had occurred across the city in the first 10 months this year, causing 40 deaths. The figures are down 19 percent and 23 percent respectively from last year's same period.
The Municipal Urban and Rural Construction and Transportation Commission also handled 1,241 cases involving unsafe operations and slapped fines totaling about 310 million yuan (US$48.66 million) on building companies.
The two figures represented a 32 percent and 49 percent rise from a year earlier due to tougher examination imposed after a high-rise inferno claimed 58 lives last November.
