Construction truck kills moped rider
A TRUCK was involved in another fatal accident in Shanghai yesterday when a moped rider was killed in Zhabei District.
Also a woman was injured by a heavy vehicle on Friday after being knocked down.
The accidents were the latest involving trucks after six municipal government departments agreed on Friday to kick off a new round of a citywide campaign against speeding or overloaded construction vehicles.
In yesterday's accident, a man, unidentified by police, was crushed beneath the vehicle at the intersection of Hutai Road and Wenshui Road at 7:50am.
The man was pronounced dead an hour later, police said.
A woman, 42, was hit by a truck on Friday about 6pm on Jinqiu Road in Baoshan District, Xinmin Evening News reported yesterday. City police are investigating both accidents.
Construction vehicles have been linked to at least 14 fatal accidents since November.
Shanghai launched the year's first crackdown on reckless trucks earlier this month in a campaign carried out by traffic police.
The outcome was worrying as nearly 60 percent of construction vehicles were found overloaded or speeding during a check on December 1.
Drivers can earn extra pay if they carry more material or waste in their trucks, police said. Companies will be suspended from operating if they violate the rules, according to a crackdown campaign plan released on Friday.
