Construction work clogs city traffic
SHANGHAI'S traffic slowed last month as construction continued on more than 1,000 roads, according to the traffic police's monthly report yesterday.
The worst areas involved sections on Wusong Road, Jiangsu Road, Xizang Road and Beijing Road where average rush hour speeds dropped below 10 kilometers per hour.
Congestion also affected the Xinzhuang area, a transport hub in city's southwest, with the Shanghai-Hangzhou Expressway closed for reconstruction, the report said.
Slow traffic was also reported at downtown tourist sites with an average rush hour speed of 17 kilometers per hour, 12 percent slower than the previous month. The areas included the Shanghai Railway Station, Zhongshan Park, the Bund, Xujiahui, People's Square and Yuyuan Garden.
Speed on local elevated roads averaged 34.78 kilometers per hour in the morning rush hours and 35.38 kilometers per hour in evening
