Cops catch suspects in fatal fight at market

POLICE said they caught a group of suspects yesterday after a fight that left one man fatally stabbed and five people injured at a local wet market on Saturday.

The fight happened on Saturday morning when four staff workers of the wet market tried to stop unlicensed vendors from selling poultry and aquatic products at the Yangpu District market.

The man who died was one of the four men responsible for keeping order at the Changling Road market. The man, not identified, was rushed to a hospital but died. The other three workers and two unidentified people were also taken to the hospital with injuries.

The illegal vendors have done business around the market for a long time, residents said. When the market workers approached them at 10:30am on Saturday, the fight started. A vendor stabbed a market worker with a sharp object, witnesses said. The vendors fled.

Police said the suspects were caught at 3am yesterday but did not disclose how many there were or provide other details.
