Corrupt district boss jailed for 14 years

A FORMER district director in Shanghai was sentenced to 14 years in prison and a 200,000 yuan (US$29,301) fine for bribery today.

Cai Zhiqiang, former Putuo District director, was convicted of taking about 2.84 million yuan in bribes from company owners in exchange for preferential treatment, Shanghai No.2 Intermediate People's Court ruled today.

The court also confiscated all Cai's unlawful income and deprived him of his political rights for three years.

Cai was a director of Shanghai Personnel Bureau and was in charge of government human resources when he served as Putuo District director from 1999 to 2009.

His biggest bribe - 1.13 million yuan as well as $A10,000 (US$8,992) and a free glass-enclosed room for his home - came from Wang Yuexiang, owner of Shanghai Hongquan Group, according to the indictments.
