Countdown to new-look city marathon begins
SHANGHAI began the countdown to the 2012 Shanghai International Marathon on December 2 yesterday, with an electronic display board set up in People's Square.
The annual event, which also marks the end of the Shanghai Mass Sports Festival, will follow a new route this year. Starting from Chenyi Square on the Bund, marathon runners will pass the Nanjing Road Pedestrian Mall, Huaihai Road and Xuhui riverside avenue to finish at the Shanghai Stadium, said the Shanghai Sports Administration.
This is the first time Huaihai Road and the Xuhui riverside avenue - one of the best Huangpu River sightseeing spots in the city - have been included in the route.
The full and half marathons finish at Shanghai Sports Stadium, while the fun run ends at the Shanghai Expo Center on Nanjing Road W.
"Runners will hopefully be inspired by the historic culture and achievements brought by the rapid development of Shanghai," said Li Yuyi, director of the administration.
Li said the number of runners has been increased from 26,000 to 30,000 - 18,000 for the full and half marathons and 12,000 for the fun run. To date, more than 14,000 runners have registered for the full and half marathons, including nearly 2,000 foreigners.
The full marathon is 42.2 kilometers, the half marathon is 21 kilometers and the fun run 4.5 kilometers.
"The course looks very exciting, as it includes some of the most famous roads of Shanghai," said Nick Smith, from the United Kingdom, who has registered for the half marathon. "It's a personal adventure."
Registration for the full and half marathon is open until November 10.
Fun marathon registration opens next month. Runners can register at Shanghai International Marathon at 500 Zhongshan No. 2 Road S. or at www.shmarathon.com. Hotline numbers are 6439-7092 and 6428-5971.
