Cruise ships berth safely after container accident

STRANDED passengers began disembarking and boarding two cruise liners at Wusongkou Port this morning which were delayed after 37 containers fell into the Yangtze River.

The Quantum of the Seas and the Costa Serena berthed at the Wusongkou International Cruise Terminal around midnight today, being delayed by nearly a day due to the accident.

More than 6,000 inbound passengers disembarked the liners, while another 7,000 outbound passengers boarded around 9am today, the management of the terminal said.

The following Skysea cruise liner was also affected due to the delaying. The Skysea has rescheduled its arrival to the terminal to 6pm today. Passengers will begin disembark at 4:30pm and passengers will be able to board after 6pm, according to the terminal.

The containers, loaded with wastepaper scrap, blocked the waterway after falling at 9:57pm on Wednesday from the cargo ship Shungang 19 near Shanghai’s Wusongkou port.

The city’s maritime authority confirmed there were no dangerous goods stored in the containers.

As of last night, nine of the containers had been salvaged. Salvage ships with Shanghai Maritime Safety Administration are still searching for the rest of the containers along the Yangtze.
