Dad arrested as son is bashed to death

THE father who allegedly beat his son to death while drunk on October 10 has been arrested by Baoshan District prosecutors, a local newspaper reported today.

Four-year-old Zhang Jian was bashed almost every day since he reunited with his parents in March, according to today's Oriental Morning Post.

His father Zhang Shaobin beat him because he owed 15,000 yuan (US$2,196) to his brother-in-law for taking back his son, police said.

A prosecutor said the father may face a jail term of two to seven years.

Zhang Jian was adopted by his uncle after birth, but later the family had a baby, so the child was returned to his parents after the uncle demanded 30,000 yuan.

His father borrowed 10,000 yuan and paid another 5,000 yuan to bring the child back to Shanghai, but the once lively and rebellious kid never laughed or played, a neighbor told the newspaper.

Zhang bought two bottles of beer and two kilograms of yellow wine in the morning of October 10. He beat his son in the morning for defecating in his trousers and again in the afternoon for not eating lunch, prosecutors alleged earlier.

"Mom, I'm so tired," were Zhang Jian's reported last words to his mother after being beaten with a broom for at least three hours by his drunken father. Doctors pronounced the boy dead at No. 1 People's Hospital.
