Deadly Xuhui fire over 'revenge'

SHANGHAI police caught a man accused of setting an apartment on fire in downtown Xuhui District early yesterday, killing a woman and injuring a boy.

The suspect, surnamed Wang, was seized around midday after setting the fire before 4:30am on the third-floor of an apartment building, police said.

The fire injured a nine-year-old boy, hospitalized for severe burns and listed in stable condition, said the police.

Firefighters arrived quickly and the fire was out by 5am, said the authorities.

A young woman in her 20s was found dead in an apartment. Shanghai TV report said the apartment has been rented to several families.

The arson "was the result of revenge," said the report, which included an interview with the mother of the injured boy. The mother, surnamed Zhang, said that Wang, who worked in a restaurant, quarreled with the family over trivial issues. "He threathened us several times," said Zhang.

Wang's co-workers said Wang, who is single, "was quick to anger."
