Death sentence for bribes

A FORMER top official in Nanchang, capital of eastern China's Jiangxi Province, has been sentenced to death, with two years reprieve, for taking 39 million yuan (US$6.15 million) in bribes, local media reported yesterday.

Jiangxi Provincial Higher People's Court ruled that Tang Chengqi, a former member of the Standing Committee of Nanchang City Municipal Committee, took bribes between 1991 and 2009.

He teamed up with Zhang Xiaohua, former Party Secretary of Hufang Town, Luo Hui, former director of Sanghai Police Station and Xu Guowen. Zhang was sentenced to death with two years' reprieve, Luo was jailed for life and Xu for 13 years.

Tang's wife, Xiong Lishun, was jailed for three years.
