Debt dispute leads to car chase, one injured

Shanghai police said yesterday that they launched an investigation into a car chase incident in the Pudong New Area on Monday, in which two cars collided and a man was injured.

Pudong police said the case was not a simple traffic accident but a debt dispute that turned into a car chase.

The fast and furious scene between an Audi and a Mercedes Benz happened about 10:40am on Monday on Pucheng Road.

A man surnamed Zhu came to a residential area with his friend in an Audi, seeking repayment of an alleged 8.5 million yuan (US$1.362 million) debt, witnesses said.

When Zhu saw a Benz in the compound, he ran up with a hammer trying to smash the windows of the car. A man, surnamed Chen, who was sitting inside, immediately started the car and tried to escape.

The neighborhood then witnessed a Hollywood scene, in which Zhu was dragged by the speeding Benz while holding on to the back door while his friend, in the Audi, gave chase.

The two cars drove about 800 meters on Pucheng Road before the Audi behind forced the Benz to stop by hitting it. Zhu was injured in the crash and was in stable condition yesterday.

The trio was questioned by police later.

Zhu revealed that Chen, the owner of two maternity nursing homes, owed him 8.5 million yuan for decoration fee. However, Chen, who is also the CEO of a major shopping mall group, only admitted to a 1 million yuan debt.
