Despite rumor, no baby was abducted
CITY police yesterday dispelled a rumor of a child kidnapping in downtown Xujiahui over the weekend, which had been posted online and attracted wide public attention.
It turned out the incident was only an attempt to steal a wallet from a woman with a baby buggy. Xuhui District police said the witness who posted the story online had mistook the attempted theft for an abduction but realized his mistake after communicating with police.
The post on kds.pchome.net, a popular local cyber community, was deleted yesterday.
"The suspects didn't get the wallet and the woman didn't call the police," said Du Ming, a media officer of the district police.
The drama took place about 6:10pm on Zhaojiabang Road near Xujiahui Park in Xuhui District when the woman was walking while pushing the buggy, police said. Two men riding a red scooter tried to steal her wallet, police said.
"The one on the back seat first jumped off the scooter and followed the woman and the other one was waiting at a bus station there," wrote the witness in the story he posted online. "The following man then suddenly ran up to snatch the baby in the buggy. However, the attempt failed as the baby was fastened in the buggy with a seat belt."
The woman then beat the man and cried for help, the post said. Failing to get anything, the two soon fled the scene, said the witness, who called police.
But when police came to the scene, neither the woman nor the two suspects could be found, Du said.
"We then checked the surveillance video and found that the two were aiming at the woman's wallet, not the kid," Du told Shanghai Daily.
