Dismembered arms leave cops baffled
A FORENSIC examination will take at least three days for Putuo District police to confirm the identity of a victim whose dismembered arms were recovered from a man-made lake.
Police are still trying to figure out what happened, Putuo District officials said yesterday.
The body parts were pulled ashore when workers were cleaning the small lake at about 7:50am on Friday at Huxi Workers' Cultural Palace, a public entertainment venue near Caoyang Station on Metro Line 3.
Police referred to the two upper limbs without giving other details, while witnesses said the body parts had already started decomposing.
"At first we thought the limbs were plastic," said one witness who gathered around the lake after hearing the cleaner scream.
"People were so scared when they realized the arms were real," said the old man who does morning exercise at the palace every day.
It was not clear whether the remains belonged to a man or a woman, police said yesterday.
The area was cordoned off after police reached the scene. Officers questioned people who work in nearby stores and searched the lake.
No other body parts were found, and police did not say whether there was any indication of foul play.
