Disneyland also land for budget homes
SHANGHAI is expecting to set up budget homes around the site of the Disneyland project, Mayor Han Zheng said yesterday at the ongoing annual session of the municipal legislature.
"I must stress that we don't expect housing prices around the Disneyland project to be too high," Han said.
Housing prices in Chuansha Town of the Pudong New Area, where the project will be located, began to rise when the project was still a rumor.
Han said he plans to negotiate with the Pudong government about allocating some land around the site for budget homes.
Budget homes can be up to 50 percent lower than market price, which are built for those who cannot afford standard houses.
The city government regards the housing issue as a priority to improve residents' living conditions while boosting the economy.
During his meeting with members of the city's top political advisory body yesterday, Han said the budget home program is necessary to meet the demands of some families with special needs, and can't be totally replaced by low-rent housing.
Some of the members, who are in their annual session, challenged the feasibility of budget homes.
"We should use different methods to cope with problems at different level," Han said.
"The government is not rash in carrying out the program - the decision is made on substantial research, and we can give details of the debate during the process later," he said.
Smooth progress
Meanwhile, more than 2,000 households and 297 enterprises at the site of the Disneyland project are to be relocated by the end of June to make way for the first-phase construction of the project.
Resettlement work began on January 5. About 75 percent of the households and 40 percent of enterprises had signed resettlement contracts as of Monday, said Yu Yong, head of Chuansha Town.
Yu attributed the smooth progress of the resettlement to reasonable compensation, the design of new homes for relocated residents and the involvement of lawyers.
The first-phase construction of the Disneyland project, covering 4 square kilometers, will consist of a theme park and supporting facilities at an estimated cost of 25 billion yuan (US$3.66 billion).
