Doctors launch study on combination of TCM and western anti-viral therapy to improve hepatitis treatment

DOCTORS from Shuguang Traditional Chinese Medicine are cooperating with Ruijin Hospital to carry out a study on combination of TCM and western anti-viral therapy on patients with hepatitis.

The treatment targets the control of liver fibrosis to improve hepatitis treatment effects, experts told a medical forum yesterday.

“The study was part of the major scientific project in the nation. A total of 630 patients will participate the study and receive liver biopsy before and after the treatment,” said Hu Yiyang from Shuguang.

There are over 30 million people with hepatitis B in China and 40 percent of them can develop into liver cirrhosis through liver fibrosis.

Hu said TCM medicine involved in the study is a traditional herb combination called Fuzhenghuayu compound, which consists of six TCM medicines like Danshen, or the root of red-rooted salvia, Jiaogulan, or gynostemma pentaphyllum and cordyceps sinesis.

“We have fulfilled new drug study on the TCM and marketed it in 2002,” Hu said.

“Clinical trials home and abroad all confirmed its effects on hepatitis. This cooperation with Ruijin is to study how to further improve its effects on hepatitis patients. We expected the treatment effects can be improved by 15 percentage points with the combination of anti-viral therapy.”
