Donating to save lives

THE 25-year-old Yang Wei and 33-year-old Lu Wenjie donated their stem cells in Shanghai today to save two leukemia patients in Guangdong Province and Shanghai respectively.

Yang, a Yi minority from Yunnan Province, came to Shanghai to work in a local company last year. He registered for the stem cell donor’s program in Yunnan while donating blood in 2013 and was informed for the match with a leukemia patient in Guangdong in February.

“Though many relatives and friends expressed their worries about my health for giving donation, I consulted doctors and decided to donate stem cell to help the patient, who is of my same age,” he said. “It is a very meaningful thing.”

The Shanghai branch of China Marrow Donor Program has had 148,000 volunteers and fulfilled 356 donations by today.
