Downtown check-in building will become shopping mall

The city’s flight check-in building in downtown Jing’an District is being turned into a shopping mall in a major renovation project.
The Shanghai Airport City Terminal Building on Nanjing Road W. was built in 2002 to allow people to check in for their flights at either Hongqiao or Pudong international airports. However, not enough people used it to justify its existence.
The building is being turned into a commercial shopping mall although people will also be able to buy flight tickets and check flight information, an official with the Shanghai Airport Authority said.
The renovation work will be completed by February 15, the official said.
