Driver arrested over car crash
A 32-YEAR-OLD truck driver has been arrested for driving away from the scene of a crash on March 2 that killed the father of a 4-year-old girl, traffic police said over the weekend.
The suspect, Si Hongxian, a Jiangsu Province native working for a local company, allegedly drove away from the scene about 8:40pm on March 2 after the victim's car hit his truck from behind, lost control and slammed into guardrails, police said.
Si's co-worker who was also in the truck allegedly told him to stop and check on the driver of the other car but Si left the scene, police said. Si allegedly told police he didn't want to get into trouble for a crash that was not his fault.
Traffic police said the cause of the accident was under investigation. Tests have shown the victim had not been drinking. Si claimed to have heard a tire burst at time of the crash but police found no blown tire on the victim's car.
Traffic police said the collision could be related to the fact that the truck was driving too slowly. Si's truck was allegedly driving between 50 and 60 kilometers per hour in a lane that requires driving speeds to stay above 60km/h.
A piece of glass that broke off one of the truck's lights led police to the truck driver. Surveillance video clips showed Si's truck had a broken front lamp.
The victim was a Shanghai native from Fengxian District. He was a cab driver but was driving his own car at time of the crash, police said.
